The Ikhaya Park project received and Honorable Mention (out of 275 submissions) for its entry in the International Design Competition to Design a soccer pitch for a village in Somkhele, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa.
The competition was held by Architecture for Humanity. Jury consisted of MoMA Design Curator Paola Antonelli, Yves Behar (Fuse Project), Kevin Carrol (Nike), Walter Hood (Chair of Landscape Architecture at UC Berkley) Cee Cee (Somkhele Soccer team captain) and the American soccer celebrity Ethan Zohn amongst others.
Project Intent: βThe pitch will serve as a gathering place for youth between the ages of 9 and 14 including a home for the first-ever girls football league in the area. The pitch will also act as a tool to disseminate information on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment and eventually a service point for a mobile health care clinic.β
The Ikhaya Park Entry consisted of a Soccer Playing Arena, Skeletal Seating Structure, Accacia Weaving Landscape, Subterranean Community Circle.
